چکیده

Designing an aircraft without conventional control surfaces is of interest to aerospace community. In this direction, smart actuator devices such as synthetic jets have been proposed to provide aircraft maneuverability instead of control surfaces. In this article, a numerical study is performed to investigate the effects of unsteady suction and blowing oil airfoils. The unsteady suction and blowing is introduced at the leading edge of tile airfoil in the form of tangential jet.. Numerical solutions are obtained using Reynolds-averaged viscous compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Unsteady suction and blowing is investigated as a means of separation control to obtain lift on airfoils. The effect of blowing coefficients oil lift. and drag is investigated. The numerical simulations are compared with experiments from tile Tel-Aviv University (TAU). These results indicate that unsteady suction and blowing can be used as a means of separation control to generate lift. on airfoils.

Active control of flow separation over an airfoil using synthetic jets

We perform large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow separation over an airfoil and evaluate the effectiveness of synthetic jets as a separation control technique. The flow configuration consists of flow over an NACA 0015 airfoil at Reynolds number of 896,000 based on the airfoil chord length and freestream velocity. A small slot across the entire span connected to a cavity inside the airfoil is ...

Numerical solution of unsteady flow on airfoils with vibrating local flexible membrane

Unsteady flow separation on the airfoils with local flexible membrane (LFM) has been investigated in transient and laminar flows by the finite volume element method. A unique feature of the present method compared with the common computational fluid dynamic softwares, especially ANSYS CFX, is the modification using the physical influence scheme in convection fluxes at cell surfaces. In contr...

Effect of Regular Surface Perturbations on Flow Over an Airfoil

This paper presents an investigation on the effect of introducing large-scale roughness through static curvature modifications on the low speed flow over an airfoil. The surfaces of a standard Eppler 398 airfoil have been modified with regular perturbations or “bumps” of the order of 2%c for this purpose. While the actual E398 airfoil is not a suitable candidate for low Re cases due to extensiv...

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF DRAG REDUCTION ON AHMED MODEL USING A COMBINATION OF ACTIVE FLOW CONTROL METHODS

Aerodynamic drag is an important factor in vehicles fuel consumption. Pressure drag which is the main component of total drag is a result of boundary layer separation from vehicle surface. Flow control methods are applied to avoid or at least delay separation. Depending upon whether these methods consume energy to control the flow or not, they are called active or passive control methods. In th...
